What is White Discharge?

White vaginal discharge is a natural fluid produced by the body to maintain vaginal health. It plays a vital role in cleaning, moisturizing, and protecting the vagina from infections. While normal discharge is clear or milky white with no odor, changes in color, consistency, or smell may indicate an underlying issue.

Causes of White Discharge

Normal Causes:
  • Ovulation: Increased discharge due to hormonal changes.
  • Pregnancy: Hormonal shifts may result in thicker white discharge.
  • Menstrual Cycle: Discharge fluctuates naturally during the cycle.

Abnormal Causes:

  • Yeast Infection: Thick, clumpy discharge with itching and irritation.
  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): Thin, grayish-white discharge with a fishy odor.
  • STIs (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea): May cause yellowish-white discharge with pain or odor.
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Foul-smelling discharge with pelvic pain and fever.
  • Hormonal Imbalance: Stress, birth control, or menopause can alter discharge.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Consult a doctor if white discharge is accompanied by:

  • A strong odor or unusual color (yellow, green, or brown)
  • Itching, burning, or redness
  • Thick, cottage cheese-like texture
  • Pain during urination or intercourse
  • Fever, pelvic pain, or blood-tinged discharge outside your period
